Icebreaker

The student Icebreaker will kick-off the conference and student activities on September 7th. This event is designed for you to meet other students attending the conference from other universities and colleges. A conference orientation is also planned to help you navigate your way through the conference and get the most out of the week.

Quiz bowl

The Quiz Bowl matches up teams from forestry schools across Canada in a head to head forestry trivia competition. The Quiz Bowl will be held the evening of September the 7th and pre-registration is necessary, so get your team ready as soon as you can. Following the quiz bowl students are invited to the main conference Icebreaker and CIF Launch.

Student Workshops

The voice of forest practitioners is often heard at many conferences; however students do not always have the opportunity to provide their own point of view on current forestry issues. A Student Workshop session will be held during the conference in order to seek student input about recruitment and the image of forestry. After all you are the future of forestry!

Poster Session

In order to encourage graduate and undergraduate students to present their work, we will be hosting a Poster Session during the entire conference. This will be a great opportunity to meet people and discuss your topic with them. Since space is limited, posters will be selected based on the submission of abstracts (more information to be announced).
A Student Social Event will be held at The Cellar, a campus bar, where forestry students from UNB visit to socialize and relax. This will be your opportunity to meet and socialize with other forestry students in a fun relaxed atmosphere.

Keynote Speakers

Other events that will be of interest include Keynote speakers and lecture sessions, conference tours and exhibits.

Keynote speakers and lecture sessions will address a variety of themes including lectures given by R.W. Behan & Marty Luckert. R.W. Behan wrote “The myth of the omnipotent forester” in 1966 which was followed by Luckert in 2006 with “Has the myth of the omnipotent forester become the reality of the impotent forester?” These papers examine the role of the professional forester in managing public forests, and whether this has created the reality of the impotent forester.

Field Tours

Three Conference Tour options are available including: The Bay of Fundy, The
Upper St. John River Valley and the Acadia Research Station. The Bay of Fundy tour will visit the picturesque Bay of Fundy with a guided walk on the Fundy Trail and visits to operations with local foresters. The Upper St. John River Valley tour will examine the challenges foresters face in the region and highlight the diverse forests and rich culture of the St. John River Valley. The tour of the Acadia Research Station will showcase historical and ongoing research of this Canadian Forest Service research forest.
