NOVA SCOTIA SECTION ADDRESS STEPHEN HARPER REGARDING THE EXPERIMENTAL LAKES AREA
 | MAY 22, 2013
The Nova Scotia Section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry is urging the Prime Minister to continue with uninterrupted operation by the Government of Canada through the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in the Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern, Ontario. While many parts of the world face the imminent, or existing threat of water shortages and denigration of water quality, Canada holds 7% of the world's total renewable freshwater supply. Enabling for the continued operation of the Experimental Lakes Area would ensure this world class, Canadian scientific endeavor will not be destroyed.

While the CIF/IFC has a number of international projects currently underway, we are pleased to share with you some of the results of this particular work that we have undertaken in China. We are now focusing on forest science extension and general knowledge sharing, with several exchanges of delegations now complete and more scheduled. We are also planning to assist Chinese forest professionals with science writing and editing training that will be provided by our members in a number of Asia Pacific countries over the next three years.

LETTER TO THE ROYAL ONTARIO MUSEUM
 | April 18, 2013
A Registered Professional Forester (RPF) who is a member of both OPFA and CIF/IFC recently visited the Royal Ontario Museum, noting in particular the Vale lnco Limited Gallery of Earth's Treasures and the Schad Gallery of Biodiversity. She reported that the galleries were well laid out, informative, and truly showpieces of which all Ontarians can be proud, with one exception. At the entrance to the Gallery of Biodiversity was a diorama with a large banner stating "Extracting Natural Resources is Threatening the Boreal Forest Ecosystem". The diorama lumps all types of resource extraction under the category of a 'threat', and therefore would seem to target forest management and the harvesting of wood among the negative extraction activities.
With this in mind, the OPFA is concerned that the diorama is seriously misleading the public, and that the facts, some of which we outline for you below, do not support the main premise of the display.

 |
March 8, 2013
Protecting species at risk versus protecting jobs is not an “either – or” situation. Throughout rural and northern Ontario there are numerous species at risk designations, however the people living in rural and northern communities are excellent stewards of the land, and forest practitioners and professionals employed by both government and industry work to achieve full environmental, social and economic sustainability – and this includes effectively protecting species at risk.
